a letter from Paul Austin
Phil Monroe, your letter about traffic in the Eagle of Nov. 18, clearly shows just how out of touch you and the rest of the city council is.
Your attempt to show all the good things you think you did for the community is just spin and most are, in fact, bad for the vast majority of the people you are in office to serve.
The speed bumps on Pomona and Glorietta have done nothing to remove or slow the traffic. Most cars just move right along. All it has done is cause damage to cars. You gave a few people on those streets a false feeling of well being at the expense of many more people. You should remove the bumps and even increase the speed limit.
The two stop signs on First are a waste of money. They do nothing to make it safer to cross the street. People are not walking blocks, they just cross at a corner. They cross at any place they can make it. The intersections are T's and a stop sign does nothing but cause traffic to have to stop and waste time and fuel.
The barriers at A, Sixth, and C on Third should never have been put in. This is another example of trying to please a few people at the expense of the vast majority. Now the city lawyers are doing a less then a vigorous job of fighting in the courts to have them removed. Your leadership is very much in question if that is the best you can do.
More traffic studies just waste more of our money, but they give you cover.
The tunnel will never be built and if it is, it will not do the job. But, it is another project you can hang your hat on and blame for not moving along. More spin control.
The best way to get traffic out of the town is to get it out of the town. Put in the left turn lights at Glorietta and Third for all the south-bound traffic. Put lights in to control the intersections at the tennis courts. Why are you all so reluctant to do the obvious?
Phil, you are a nice man and a friend, but you and the other three remaining incumbents still don't get it. But you will when you are voted out of office just like the other two were the last time. It is time you all started to look out for the majority of the people you were elected to serve.
